There are many opinions on which type of direct burial product best lends itself to the underground wire environment. Some prefer copper, some like “cable in conduit” and others use standard direct burial aluminum. Copper is generally the most expensive of the options due to its current raw material costs. Cable in conduit is used in many regions because the HDPE conduit gives it more protection from accidental nicks from shovels, rocks and other trench debris as well as pin holes caused by lightning strikes and gophers. This is an expensive option. It is also very difficult to find cable failures inside conduit with cable locators. The least expensive is standard direct burial aluminum. However, it is more susceptible to failure due to nicks from shovels, rocks, lightning strikes and gophers. Read More→
